张旭光草书取法“二王”之技，突破唐宋元明范式，融合了传统狂草的奔放和现代审美，线条如惊涛裂岸，结构似奇峰突起，在“乱石穿空”中暗藏法度，形成了“雄浑中见精微，狂放中寓静气”的独有风格，用笔大胆，守正创新，强调侧锋与中锋交替使用，线条丰富多变，行笔抑扬顿挫，突破传统草书单一笔法限制，被网友称其为‘今草第一人’。
他特别注重生宣和羊毫笔的使用，斗方、中堂等形式强化了视觉表现力。作为荣宝斋艺术总监、中国书协草书委员会副主任，他倡导“重读经典”，提出“以现代审美意识开掘书法传统”，对当代书坛影响很大。
