  华夏的制砚史从清代发展至今,其形制、雕琢更为丰富多样,成为了集绘画、书法、诗文、雕刻于一体的文房珍品,并步入到中国制砚史的高峰期。这期间涌现出诸多制砚高手,如“清代制砚第一人”顾二娘、“清初江南第一者”王岫君、“近现代最杰出的制砚大师”陈端友等。其中陈端友大师的制砚,体现了近现代砚雕的文人意趣、审美追求和艺术风格。他一生制砚的精品俱为馆藏,当中上海博物馆还珍藏有大师的35方制砚佳作。

  陈端友(1892—1959),名介,字介持,江苏常熟王市人。他出身贫寒,少年丧父,由他的伯父推荐往扬州“问古斋”碑帖店为学徒。其师张太平是苏州雕刻碑帖和石砚的行家。1912年他随师迁至上海,七个月后张太平去世,其子将店铺交与陈端友经营;不谙经营之道的陈端友勉力维持,五年后关门停业。1917年冬起,陈端友便在家中制砚,后参加“海上题襟馆金石书画会”,结识了吴昌硕、熊松泉、商笙伯、贺天健、张石国等书画名家,并求学于任伯年之子任堇。与书画家的往来提高了陈端友的艺术修养,使他能吸取中国传统绘画的表现手法,在砚雕中体现出绘画的艺术境界。

  由于闭门制砚难以谋生,大约从1935年起,陈端友受中医名家余伯陶之聘,为其制砚。解除生计之忧的陈端友,全身心投入到砚的创作中,这期间所制的砚皆为陈氏砚雕中的精品,尤以竹节、古钱、镜砚、蝉砚等为代表作。1949年以后,陈端友曾任上海文史馆馆员、华东艺术专科学校工艺研究员,著名的九龟砚便是在此期间完成。1953年九龟砚参加北京举行的“第一届全国民间工艺美术展览会”,引起轰动,并入选图录。

  如图1这件陈端友浮雕九龟荷叶形端砚,长17.7、宽15.6、高3.2厘米。砚作随形老坑端石,色青偏紫,质刚而柔,纯净致密,坚实细腻。整砚融线雕、镂雕、透雕、微雕、浮雕、深浅雕为一体,满工琢成。砚面(背)琢12幅荷叶,开张启合、残枯卷缩、柄梗剥蚀、径脉虫蛀,分别呈折叠形、圆盾形、半圆形、扇面形,姿态各异,惟妙惟肖,围合成荷塘;尤其那残荷从砚面直雕到砚背,无语地告知人们前生今世,大有“残荷卧水知秋意”之感。更有意趣的是墨堂以蕉叶白、鱼脑冻、青花、火捺花纹映衬荷池,面、背镌刻9只大小不一的灵龟各显其态,或伫立荷叶探头张望、或爬行荷叶上觅食、或躲藏叶下静静小憩、或爬越坡寻友、或探身残叶凝听。墨池沿雕饰3只淡定自若的小田螺,池旁立雕一只小螺触角着池,戏诱灵龟窥视。细赏砚背,荷池新叶茁出,生机盎然,小叶似浮萍,老叶舒如伞、卷如盖,密密匝匝的蕨类、绿藻布塘大半,两束荷花相并盛开,几笔芦荻点缀风韵,一小龟浮曳水纹畅游。好一幅残荷晚秋图,给人无穷的遐思:残荷的生命轮回,将大自然神话镌刻于世,晾晒在天地人间。

  清代中晚期,乾嘉学派风行文坛,这是一门讲究训诂考据的经学派系。以金石学考证古代历史、文献、器物等,是乾嘉学派的重要理论基础。金石学的盛行,引导了文人研究古物,摹刻金石、瓦券、泉币、古镜之风日盛。此风之流传延至清末民国,大师亦有此作。如图2这件陈端友制古泉端砚,长19、宽16、高3.5厘米。砚身为一堆方出土的古钱,只在中间琢出砚堂,以留其用。古钱或锈蚀残破,或粘连叠压,或钱文清晰,摹写出土之物无出其右。砚左下侧某件古钱上刻“常熟陈端友制”款,旁有“词砚斋藏”方形印。大师除此古泉端砚外,另有一件古泉砚以及吉金砚和镜砚等,都是摹写古物,反映了时代风尚。

  图3所示为陈端友刻竹节端砚,径15.2—16.3、厚3.3厘米。砚身为一段横向砍下的竹根,截面稍作琢磨为砚面,背面则虫蛀斑斑,伤痕累累,侧面的竹皮也已干枯开裂,颇有残破之象。其砚盒也做成竹根状,下部根须丛生,宛如天成。将此一节竹形砚置于竹根盒或取出,其过程与结果皆妙趣横生。有“常熟陈端友制”长方印。

  陈端友大师制砚,一是习惯于采用通雕满刻形式,二是乐于择取生活中的真实物品作题材,三是技艺在不显山不露水中施展。如图4所示这件陈端友制甜瓜端砚,长17.5、 宽11.3、 厚3.5厘米。一个甜瓜,有藤、有叶,取它的半边能形成一砚吗?大师能!叶实在雕刻得“平庸”,他用心了。藤实在雕琢得“粗糙”,他处理了。瓜的正面,下部有呵裂开的痕纹,那纹、条状横在甜瓜上,的确不够美观。但,一是它真实,这样的裂纹,真实的南瓜、丝瓜、甜瓜上时有;二是它精巧,或许刻这样的横纹其实是不得已,这道痕纹本是砚石上的一条横线、一道石病,因为横在那太有碍观瞻,所以才有了这样的逼真处理,这样的返璞归真。

  纵观以上四件上海博物馆藏陈端友大师制砚佳作,读者可感知其艺术灵感来自他的生活实践和历史感悟。无论海天旭日,还是螺、蝉、鱼、龟,大师无不仔细观察体会,生动还原;古鼎古镜,也再现出古物的精神。读者还可感知大师极其擅长把握自然物体的细微之处,被锯后竹节的糙面、锈蚀残破的古钱、池塘戏水的九龟等,一块块顽石在他的刀下却演化成了充满灵气的生物。
