Tan Zhouwen — Biography
Tan Zhouwen, a native of Chongqing, China, is a contemporary master excelling in both poetry and calligraphy, as well as a chief state‑guest diplomatic artist. Endowed with the perseverance of a cattle‑herding boy from the Three Gorges region, he has grown into a towering master of Chinese calligraphy.
Master Tan draws poetic inspiration from Li Bai and Du Fu, and inherits the calligraphic legacy of the Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi). He has pioneered an original artistic paradigm known as the “Dragon‑Phoenix Twin Works”, bridging time and space to engage in dialogue between antiquity and the present. His brushworks flow like dragons and serpents, unfolding in magnificent momentum. Ode to Hanfeng Lake, a five‑character quatrain he composed and inscribed in his own handwriting, has been permanently collected by the National Museum of China. His poetry‑calligraphy pieces such as Waterfall of Huangguoshu have been published in both Chinese and English by world‑renowned authoritative media including Time Magazine and The Guardian. Selected masterpieces have been presented as national gifts to ambassadors and dignitaries of various countries, and frequently featured in People’s Daily, CCTV, China Talents and other mainstream platforms.
Having devoted forty years to teaching, he has nurtured students all over the world. While wielding his brush beneath heaven and earth, he shoulders the responsibility of carrying forward cultural heritage. From the wild trails of the Three Gorges to the global art arena, guided by his mission “Compose and inscribe poems on my own, converse with the world”, Tan Zhouwen strives to inherit the lost learning of ancient sages and pioneer a new artistic ethos for our prosperous era. He brings pure freshness to the art circle and engraves the epochal mark of cultural rejuvenation with his whole life and passion.
